Hunter Mill District News, March 31, 2020

March 31, 2020

To My Hunter Mill District Neighbors:

At today's Board of Supervisors' Budget Committee meeting we had a very sobering discussion on the FY 2021 Budget. As the county's budget director explained, there is still a lot we don't know regarding the implications of the pandemic on the county's revenue, as well as the costs associated with helping residents and impacted county operations. For example, the county's School Age Child Care (SACC) program brings in $4.2 million revenue a month when school is open - that's lost revenue since schools are closed. There are many other examples, including the loss of sales tax revenue on things like cars and furniture, or the hotel occupancy tax. I understand that it could be May until we get a clear picture of the adjustments on our revenue and costs, but I promise to keep you informed as we go through the budget process. For your review, here is the presentation we had today.

Important upcoming dates for you to know:

April 7: County Executive Bryan Hill anticipates that an updated FY 2021 proposal will be sent to the Board of Supervisors.

April 8: I am scheduling a virtual budget town hall at 7 p.m. My staff and I are still working out the details to enable your participation. I will get that information out to you as soon as it is available through this newsletter, as well as my social media accounts on TwitterFacebook or Instagram.

April 14-16: Public hearings on the FY 2021 budget - video and written testimony is encouraged and an online form will also be available. More information is forthcoming on how to provide input in these formats.

Respectfully,
Walter

You can still shop for food and essentials, volunteer for nonprofits/community organizations who really need our help right now, or take a walk in your neighborhood. In his news conference, the Governor emphasized that too many people are still not heeding the advice to stay home except for essential trips. This is a public health emergency and it will take all of us to flatten the curve. Read the Executive Order.

As a result of the new order, Fairfax County Government is examining its services and locations to see if there is any additional impact beyond what was announced last week. I will provide that information when it is available.
